How to beat your fear of needles

This comes just in time for the Covid-19 vaccine! Wherever your place in the Covid vaccination queue, the largest programme of its kind represents a near-miraculous development in response to a devastating global pandemic, possibly even heralding its end.
So, you might think we’d all be jumping at the chance to get ourselves vaccinated!
But if you suffer from trypanophobia – otherwise known as the ‘fear of needles’ – you may be living in terror of that appointment letter dropping onto your doormat.
You could suffer from trypanophobia if you experience feelings of panic or anxiety at the thought of a needle, you feel faint at the sight of one, or you find yourself going to great lengths to avoid medical procedures that involve an injection.
Trypanophobia: you are not alone
Trypanophobia is more common than you might think. According to the charity Anxiety UK, between 3.5% and 10% of the population are petrified of needles.
Reasons for this vary; some people are fearful because they had a bad experience with childhood injections, for example.
Sadly, many people are unwilling to share their terror of needles because they feel embarrassed, or they worry that others will dismiss them by saying unhelpful things like, “you’re an adult, so just get over it”.
Stopping fear in its tracks
Unfortunately, “just getting over” a crippling fear is almost impossible to achieve.
In fact, trypanophobia can feel so intense and overwhelming, that some sufferers will be considering skipping their place in the Covid vaccination queue altogether.
