Has Covid made you more fearful and anxious?

Updated: Jan 18, 2022

BWRT® Is Here to Help. The UK started its first coronavirus lockdown in March 2020. But as we limped into our third lockdown in December, there was a distinct feeling that the national mood had changed for the worse.

Many people had been unable to hug their loved ones for the best part of a year, as we stayed at home and kept our distance. While the vaccine programme offers some hope for the future, right now the short, dark days of winter can feel incredibly hard to bear.

Anxiety in the UK

According the Office for National Statistics, 49.6% of UK adults described themselves as “highly anxious” during the first lockdown, citing loneliness and negative effects of Covid on their work as major contributing factors.

As it progressed, the pandemic has caused a raft of fearful “what ifs” about the future that affects almost everybody. Parents fret about their children’s education; families worry about the health of their elderly loved ones.

Those in employment wonder about the safety of their jobs, while the self-employed struggle with cancelled contracts, as frontline workers toil to the point of exhaustion.

Meanwhile, daily news reports of people not wearing masks, or refusing to distance themselves in shops, not to mention the disturbing figures from hospitals, has done nothing to ease our concerns.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the effects on our mental health have been devastating. Insomnia has increased, and many people have turned to comfort eating, alcohol, or even drugs, just to get themselves through another day.

If you are suffering from Covid-related anxiety, this could show itself in symptoms that include palpitations or feeling sick, heightened irritability, and a lack of concentration for tasks you used to find easy.
